Our studio grew out of Maurel Press originated in 1955 by artists Sheila and Ary Marbain. It opened as a custom screen printing shop specializing in printing with contemporary artists. Sheila had studied art at Black Mountain College in leroy North Carolina with Joseph Albers, Ilya Bolotowsky and William deKooning from 1948 through 1950. Ary had worked and exhibited as a painter in France for many years. After the sudden death of Ary Marbain in 1963, the studio was closed for a year. Sheila then decided to modernize the workshop and introduce screen photography along with a new vacuume printing neiman and font table. Our studio reopened on 23rd Street in Manhattan. With an assistant, Sheila plunged into printing three dimensional objects. A plexiglass airship for Lichtenstein, an Oldenburg soft drum set, leroy a set of dominoes with Fahlstrom, and a large fabric banner with Marisol neiman were some of the editions.
Then Lile got an old unix machine together (being a unix systems administrator, this was fairly simple) and registered art.net with the Internic. Once the domain was created, with the help of friends, she brought up art.net onto the Internet. font and leroy Lile started neiman contacting artists about the San Francisco Bay Area who might be interested font in showing their works on the Internet and helped them come up on art.net. She visited many cafe''s to see the local artists works and enjoy the coffees. leroy and neiman When she saw works she liked, she contacted the artists and offered to help them come up on the Internet and the WWW via art.net. Many artists took the plunge and are now resident artists here font at art.net. Artists from around the net started hearing about Art on the Net or would discover the art.net web site via the WWW.
Currently leroy our site is international, representing over 100 artists from around neiman the world. We have poets, musicians, painters, font sculptors, leroy digital artists, performance artists, animators and much more. We are always open to adding artists in new areas. Art on leroy the Net came into existance in June of 1994. The idea of having such a site came to Lile while she was involved neiman in an open studios event in April. She was displaying many of her new oil paintings in her studio when a friend and young font entrepeneur came through and wanted to purchase an oil painting entitled "Art leroy on the neiman Net". They talked about how wonderful it would be to have art up on the Internet for viewing and he offered font Lile internet access for a WWW site that would help artists share their art. So like many things in the art world, the site began with a barter with Lile trading the oil painting, "Art on the Net" for an Internet connection for one year.
